It's been almost 10 years since I've run a motorcycle exhaust with a baffle installed.<br />
<br />
My default position is always Akrapovic, drop the catalytic converter and remove the baffle - let her breathe and encourage the braaarp.<br />
<br />
Don't ask me why, I don't have a clever enough answer, but for some reason I felt the need to install the baffle in the Akrapovic on the MT09......ummmm - yeah, dunno?<br />
<br />
So here goes.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, there is a bit of work required to get to this bolt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ekkHNekHbl0/WsmojKuJi7I/AAAAAAAAVfo/XegzVGnFXGUQgRH_H2qBsAr9H2HTqA9-QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20180408_143921.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1214" data-original-width="1600" height="302" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ekkHNekHbl0/WsmojKuJi7I/AAAAAAAAVfo/XegzVGnFXGUQgRH_H2qBsAr9H2HTqA9-QCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20180408_143921.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You've got to take the canister off. There is no clearance to get a tool onto the bolt head, and zero chance of inserting the very tightly fitting baffle - and aligning it - whilst mounted to the bike. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In order to get the can off, the mounting strap and retention springs have to be removed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9qlSTwLPwo/WsmpK4oxDsI/AAAAAAAAVf0/8NdvaeoMsjoibeNYciMvkl6RI9maEgRdgCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20180407_131340.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9qlSTwLPwo/WsmpK4oxDsI/AAAAAAAAVf0/8NdvaeoMsjoibeNYciMvkl6RI9maEgRdgCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20180407_131340.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As everyone who has ever fitted an exhaust canister will attest - retention springs are a bastard invention. Herein lies an industrial design opportunity. Engineer a better retention system - I've got some ideas......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JJKuqquHq_0/Wsmp4cH503I/AAAAAAAAVgA/qwDDFDGsL1cr9u6ARi12xTvQadRqZ3obACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20180407_131403.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1012" data-original-width="1600" height="252" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JJKuqquHq_0/Wsmp4cH503I/AAAAAAAAVgA/qwDDFDGsL1cr9u6ARi12xTvQadRqZ3obACKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20180407_131403.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All done, what was set out was achieved, baffle installed. Akrapovic muted somewhat. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KLAA1ufmTWo/WsmqNC_N7GI/AAAAAAAAVgI/XFtMju6Kvaw23MBOJEphfLOteZ39hx-DwCKgBGAs/s1600/00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180408142823244_COVER.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="300" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KLAA1ufmTWo/WsmqNC_N7GI/AAAAAAAAVgI/XFtMju6Kvaw23MBOJEphfLOteZ39hx-DwCKgBGAs/s400/00100dPORTRAIT_00100_BURST20180408142823244_COVER.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Actually, I do have a reason for trying this. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Installing a baffle can sometimes aid in on/off throttle hesitation and backfire on the overrun. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was curious - OK?</div>

A short spurt, a wheelie or two to test ride the now law abiding citizen. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hmmmm....nah - don' think I like that. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
.....I'll sleep on it. </div>

All words and opinions are my own. </span></i><br />
<br />
Working away in the office on a Monday like any other, a call comes through to my personal phone.<br />
<br />
"Hey mate, it's Vic here from <a href="http://midlifecycles.com.au/" target="_blank">Mid Life Cycles</a> - an MV Agusta Brutale 800 RR has arrived, you want to come along to the launch day and have a ride?"<br />
<br />
--You bet your arse I do.<br />
<br />
Fast forward to Saturday morning as I saddle up and point the MT09 towards Kinglake, a mini moto mecca, in the sub alpine hills of Victoria's Yarra Ranges. Eyes aghast with beauty on arrival.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X6ninvlRzU0/Wn9j6Lq0ntI/AAAAAAAATD8/tm5o2-KRbSURzD4iVA7VjEDFIbD6IVzWwCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20180210_091449.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="936" data-original-width="1600" height="310" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-X6ninvlRzU0/Wn9j6Lq0ntI/AAAAAAAATD8/tm5o2-KRbSURzD4iVA7VjEDFIbD6IVzWwCKgBGAs/s400/IMG_20180210_091449.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
MV Agusta really do build some stunning motorcycles, from their styling, to the exotic materials and high end components - these machines are premium with an impeccable fit and finish. Without a skerrick of mass-production. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a meet and greet with Vic and the MV Agusta guys, a bit of paperwork and the rider's brief, I get the key to this lovey one. The Brutale 800 RR.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2zqvT4hPXwo/Wn9mibC6_1I/AAAAAAAATEU/n-jQ4uYfbGcAbcsikO8yg5fRoSfGFnCIACKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20180210_091938.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1428" data-original-width="1600" height="445.32" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2zqvT4hPXwo/Wn9mibC6_1I/AAAAAAAATEU/n-jQ4uYfbGcAbcsikO8yg5fRoSfGFnCIACKgBGAs/s320/IMG_20180210_091938.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The baby-faced ride leader - current pro tier racer - took off out of Kinglake at a fun pace, allowing us to toy with the MV's a little more than would be usually accepted on a demo ride. Liberating the throttle allowed a buck eighty plus change when the road opened up with a more consistent dollar fifty five in the corners. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Allegedly........officer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you gentleman. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As we got into the groove it was obvious that the Brutale 800 RR is more racer than roadster - it is very precise and prefers to be travelling at speed in the top half of the tachometer. The lumpy and hesitant bottom end gave over to a free revving, eager and visceral top end rush.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Start up delivered a familiar, laboured ignition - bringing back memories of past Italian insolence. At idle, the exhaust note was a tad agricultural, however fear not, as the 798cc triple spooled up the noise became like a can full of angry wasps, ready to fcuk you up. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Beyond the mid range, acceleration is exceptional - speed was added to the digital dashboard in a surprising manner, like - BAM - surprise! The quick-shifter was good, not great and better up than down, although I suspect some of this was user error as it took me a while to force my right hand not to give the throttle a momentary pause when shifting. It works better pinned. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fvBYZ61GmsU/Wn-JnH7An2I/AAAAAAAATGI/fkPmbKnuzKUKgiK2h77GUDV_O6lXy302QCKgBGAs/s1600/IMG_20180210_104946.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1043" data-original-width="1600" height="325" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fvBYZ61GmsU/Wn-JnH7An2I/AAAAAAAATGI/fkPmbKnuzKUKgiK2h77GUDV_O6lXy302QCKgBGAs/s320/IMG_20180210_104946.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Handling and chassis characteristics were phenomenal, riding position is quite committed and pitched over, requiring you to grip with your knees to hold your weight - or suffer wrist and shoulder pressure - your choice. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With minimal rake and weight cantered forward over the nose the Brutale handled magnificently, the bike felt magnetised to the earth. What witchcraft is this? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Given I was riding an unfamiliar bike I was comfortable attacking corners with more gusto than I had told myself I would. That vibrant chassis buzz when cracking on encouraged more speed towards warp territory - and it felt good, bloody good and bloody stable in doing so. The connection to the bike felt mechanical, which is odd considering all the electronics at play.....I suspected more witchcraft here. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was sad to hand the key back, the last thought I had in mind was -- </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>'Uh oh I'm not going to be able to stop thinking about you. Scalpel sharp on the road and you made my nuts fizz.' </i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think the Brutale 800 RR deserves a place in the multi bike stable, but it would be a bitch to commute on or for touring. But that's not what it's for.</div>

I'd been thinking about having the MT-09 ECU flashed for quite a while.<br />
Considering I run a straight through exhaust system - it was probably the right thing to do.<br />
On paper.<br />
<br />
Readership here is pretty cluey - just in case, ECU flashing is basically as follows. My words.<br />
<br />
The ECU (engine control unit) is effectively a mix of computer hardware and software (firmware) which controls engine and operating characteristics of the machine.<br />
<br />
Sensors provide data to the system which evaluates the input and provides calibrated output - done.<br />
<br />
Least of which the ECU, maintains a fuel map - or more importantly - a mapping from throttle position on the grip to throttle-body position, ignition, injector and - in fancy implementations - valve timings. It's all pretty clever.<br />
<br />
A common fuel map is represented as a series of compounding variables which determine a resultant.....ok, ok - terms aside.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Output = input (rider on grip) * (sensor input) * (fuel map bias) * (RPM)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HRdBRqHKu80/WmGWCyt8sNI/AAAAAAAASHQ/FWqerJ6w0EsCnaErNn_EB9NSqhOT8NejwCKgBGAs/s1600/flashtune2.png%2B%25281366%25C3%2597800%2529%2B2018-01-19%2B17-17-33.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="627" data-original-width="1217" height="205" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HRdBRqHKu80/WmGWCyt8sNI/AAAAAAAASHQ/FWqerJ6w0EsCnaErNn_EB9NSqhOT8NejwCKgBGAs/s400/flashtune2.png%2B%25281366%25C3%2597800%2529%2B2018-01-19%2B17-17-33.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The name of the game is to eliminate the oxygen sensor input at low RPM and small throttle openings, remove top end power/speed limitations and get as close to a <u style="font-weight: bold;">1 x input : 1 x output ratio as can be used smoothly and practically in the real world. </u> That last part is important, in case underline and bold wasn't obvious enough. </div>
<br />
Most internet forum hounds and riding buddies will firmly attest of the benefits of an ECU flash. They're not all wrong - but they're not perfectly right either......here we go.<br />
<br />
Don't believe the internet hysteria about burnt valves and exhaust back-pressure if you drop the catalyser and run a full system tuned by a reputable manufacturer. Insert Akrapovic, Remus, Scorpion etc.<br />
<br />
Modern bikes are fuel injected with a myriad of control: Advance or retard ignition, anti-knock sensors, throttle position sensors etc.....and back-pressure? No - unless you've chopped the exhaust off at the extractors - or are running an exotic 2-stroke; back-pressure and gas scavenging is not a thing.<br />
<br />
If you're buying your exhaust hardware from eBay or "Dan the man" down the road - I suspect - you've got much bigger problems.....just sayin'<br />
<br />
I'll preface the following with, the result of the ECU flash is pretty good.<br />
Bottom end is smoother, top end is exceptional - engine running temperature is cooler.<br />
It. Is. Good.<br />
<br />
The experience with the <a href="http://dynobike.com.au/" target="_blank">workshop</a> - well, that was pretty shit.<br />
<br />
First thing that struck me about the owner/operator was indifference. Let's call him Dave.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, my bike is my transport so I didn't have the option of just taking my ECU in.<br />
This was a mistake.<br />
<br />
Dave dismissed any semblance of service on arrival - then continued to dismiss any sense of care or attention.<br />
<br />
I watched him 'work' on my bike like a hurried, ill-tempered and distracted squirrel - like I'd taken his precious time away from internet porn or hunting for <i>his nuts. </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
Once he'd stripped the bike down to get to the ECU he fucked about with an archaic laptop to run the flashing software. To my horror, when the flash commenced - this moron kicked the patch cable out of the device.....soft brick anyone?<br />
<br />
This was the point I spoke up.<br />
<br />
"Hey mate, you haven't just bricked that have you? You know, considering you're performing a firmware flash"<br />
<br />
Ol'mate Dave<br />
"Nah, but I could have"<br />
<br />
We got talking some more. I work in IT - let's just leave it there.<br />
<br />
This guy's understanding of fundamentals around binary and hexadecimal data - which is essential to his profession as a tuner - was staggeringly poor. He talked about 'his mapping' and Japanese connection as if he was working directly with the ECU incarnation of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satoshi_Nakamoto" target="_blank">Satoshi Nakamoto</a>.<br />
<br />
Spare me.<br />
<br />
At this point I go and pat his dog (lovely thing) and contemplate pushing my bike home.<br />
Frenzied squirrel fucks about putting my bike back together.<br />
I want to cry.<br />
<br />
On the ride home the bike actually feels pretty good, smoother throttle, stronger acceleration.<br />
Not a bad result. But something about the workmanship isn't sitting well.<br />
<br />
Over the next couple of weeks I notice a few things.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The now disabled O2 sensor has been left dangling and unplugged, open to water ingress and debris. Dude - it's disabled - leave it connected and protected. </li>
<li>The pushpins around the tank haven't been replaced correctly (some are longer than others) - basic mechanical hygiene if you ask me.</li>
<li>The fairing mount bots have missing washers. </li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But then I noticed this....sometimes being OCD and over observant pays off<br />
(only sometimes) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
Time enough for the after affects to bed in and for me to be able to come away with a solid idea of what's what.<br />
<br />
It has taken some time for the experience to sink in and for the learnings and drills to become reference memory rather than a focal point. That is to say - I can now reflect on what was taught and execute as needed rather than deliberately try to practice each technique. <b><u>This last statement is important, read on. </u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sIJcXkC9RYA/WPairtgBDHI/AAAAAAAALLc/v7PkhoMuhNkN2DHwCsQRZ7jLsl3v3YtCQCPcB/s1600/BitSar-cert.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sIJcXkC9RYA/WPairtgBDHI/AAAAAAAALLc/v7PkhoMuhNkN2DHwCsQRZ7jLsl3v3YtCQCPcB/s400/BitSar-cert.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The content, the instructors and the students: </h3>
<div>
CSS runs like clockwork - you'd be hard to find fault in the operating rhythm. </div>
<div>
Instructors are a calming mix of approachable, yet firm - allowing pupils to put their trust in their mentor. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The day begins with bike scrutineering followed by an introductory theory session in a classroom full of like minded motorcyclists - eyeing each other with a mixture of nervousness and anticipation. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The diversity is amazing, riders from all walks of life with various backgrounds and vastly different levels of skill. Diversity is one of the most resounding themes with motorcyclists; never expect anything. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While surveying the room you'll no doubt catch eyes with a repeat CSS student - a level 3 or 4 perhaps (achievement unlocked) - who'll respond to your skittishness with a knowing and sympathetic gaze, as if to say: "Yep, you're shitting yourself now - it's OK mate."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
CSS level 1 is broken into 5 theory components, each with a corresponding on track session to practice the drill. The complexity of each technique builds sequentially throughout the day, and it is a long day. Be prepared and well rested - this will fatigue you both physically and mentally - I guarantee it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Each drill is closely related to the Twist of the Wrist content and the syllabus follows its mantras as expected. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We line up for the first session, the location? The World famous Phillip Island MotoGP facility.......oh man, my loins are tingling......yep - definitely shitting my pants now. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-58fp3qWciEs/WFnNkVTVFYI/AAAAAAAALKQ/D4uTIpGET6Yo0IcKuVaWNtZ6NpMPeS1jACPcB/s1600/AN5W2469.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-58fp3qWciEs/WFnNkVTVFYI/AAAAAAAALKQ/D4uTIpGET6Yo0IcKuVaWNtZ6NpMPeS1jACPcB/s400/AN5W2469.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
Drill 1 - Throttle control - No brakes, 4th gear only:</h3>
<div>
The intention of the throttle control drill is to remove distraction and understand that the job of the rider is to 'stabilise the bike' - where the throttle is the primary control impacting this task. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Getting on the throttle early and rolling on smoothly increases traction and stability by letting the chassis do its job. And brakes? No brakes.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As our instructor drummed into us "if you can't get your speed right without the brakes and only 1 gear in use, how do you expect to get it right with them?"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Good point. <br />
<br /></div>
<h3>
<b>Drill 2 - Turn in point - No brakes, 3rd and 4th gears only:</b></h3>
<div>
It was surprising how much wider and later (deep) into a corner we were coached to turn in. It makes a huge difference to the rider perception of the corner and actually changes the aspect/profile of the corner itself. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
Drill 3 - Quick turn - Light braking, 3rd and 4th gears only:</h3>
<div>
Building on drills 1 and 2, the aim of the quick turn is to control speed and stability with the throttle before sighting a turn-in point - remaining light on the bars - then BAM! One deliberate and direct input to flick the bike over and into the turn.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Oh yes, that will do nicely. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w17VFmpKUGc/WFpK3LF911I/AAAAAAAAKGY/e14O8y9CcHA6cguksrhV5ZHduyi13byCQCPcB/s1600/AN5W2279-full.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-w17VFmpKUGc/WFpK3LF911I/AAAAAAAAKGY/e14O8y9CcHA6cguksrhV5ZHduyi13byCQCPcB/s400/AN5W2279-full.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<h3>
Drill 4 - Rider input - Light braking, gears 3, 4 and 5:</h3>
<div>
No surprises here - death grip bad, light on the bars good.</div>
<div>
This drill starts the conversation around body position and how to carry your weight through you legs, locking to the bike.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But really, at level 1 - this session is more about letting you have another track session to begin consolidating what has already (hopefully) been learned.<br />
<br /></div>
<h3>
Drill 5 - Two-step - Full braking and gears:</h3>
<div>
The Ah-Ha moment.</div>
<div>
This drill is like sliding a precisely cut key into a well crafted lock. </div>
<div>
The tumblers and pins move about and align as the key snugs home. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The two-step binds drills 1 - 5 into a cohesive cornering technique by coupling throttle, turn-in point and vision into a fluid and more repeatable method of control. The two-step approach decreases the perception of speed and gives you more time to evaluate and execute the corner. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Game on.<br />
<br /></div>
<h3>
After affects and conclusions</h3>
<div>
At first I was keen to get out onto the road to practice what I had (should have) learned. But all was not well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
CSS is very track focused and relies on you to be able to see clearly through corners and be able to rinse and repeat the process to hone the skills. This is not really how roads in the real world work: Sketchy surfaces, blind corners, debris, traffic, gravel, wildlife, cagers.......etc...</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I was struggling to put into practice the drills as there was not a direct mapping or translation for something like quick turn, or two-step in the twisties on tree-lined roads with gravel washouts. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Frustration was building. I was overthinking everything.</div>
<div>
I was riding worse, more hesitant, less in tune with the bike - I felt like I was broken and couldn't ride anymore. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I did what most do - I pushed it harder.<br />
And had some very real near misses I'd rather forget. </div>
<div>
One such incident pushing wide on exit on a tree lined road, hitting gravel and going off the road - I have no idea how I didn't go down other than I remember letting the bars go to do their thing and the bike remained upright.<br />
Adrenaline and poo came out. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For a time I wished I hadn't done CSS. My brain was full of track technique.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fast forward to now. To a point where I have finally been able to take what works and realise that not all aspects relate to all situations all of the time - and I'm glad I did CSS. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Will I do level 2? </div>
<div>
Yep - game on. </div>
<div>

<br />
Other than significant price difference, there is a huge difference in the fit and finish, comfort and features offered by any helmet at any price point.<br />
<br />
So then, after 5+ years of faithful service from my Shoei XR1100 - coupled with a considerably nasty drop - it was time for a new lid.<br />
<br />
In helmet shopping mode I stuffed my pin into as many lids as I could, it is difficult to gain a proper representation of how a helmet will perform just by sticking your head in it - alas, it's the best we can do. Helmets are one of the hardest things to buy.<br />
<br />
I don't have an 'Arai head' but retried them anyway to be sure. Nope<br />
<br />
Never having owned a Shark I was intrigued by some of the new designs and features from the French company, I gave them a crack. Nope<br />
<br />
With the newer ECE helmets now available in Australia I could try some of the Bell helmets - bugger. Nope<br />
<br />
Back to Shoei then? Hmmmm. Then I tried the AGV K5<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I took the plunge and have now been riding with the K5 for about 2 months including some track time during California Superbike School. Let's take a look. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Good.</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Aesthetically, this is a very pleasing helmet. Fit and finish is good with a composite shell, sans carbon fibre, or other exotic polymers you'd find in the Pista range. That said, the helmet is appropriately light and weighs less than my old Shoei. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Rider vision is excellent considering the 'race cut' of the lid - requiring you to look up and out of the visor opening. One thing to note about the race style is that the bottom surface of the helmet has an arc which prevents it from sitting flat on a table. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Visor attachment is very simple using a similar cam and channel design as found on Shoei helmets - however the AGV offers something else too - visor increment adjustment.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0M7Gv2j6L-M/WG2Fc6_AB1I/AAAAAAAAKSQ/9cg4MqQ9vqMo9b5zKTDdAAVrTe1aV5fegCPcB/s1600/20170105_091924.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0M7Gv2j6L-M/WG2Fc6_AB1I/AAAAAAAAKSQ/9cg4MqQ9vqMo9b5zKTDdAAVrTe1aV5fegCPcB/s400/20170105_091924.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The green component is the 'Road/Urban' visor guide which has a hard stop at the top, a hard stop at the bottom and three intermediate positions in between - also, there is a fine stop opening to allow the visor to vent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also included are blue for 'Race' with hard stop fully opened or fully closed with nothing in between and red for 'Tour' which provides open/closed and increments but no fine stop for slow speed venting. Out of the box the helmet is set to red, touring.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sr5_F086eY4/WG2DqLnwFoI/AAAAAAAAKRM/qGoaN8ck_SYFf75X2zlaOHMnMFVgEH7LQCPcB/s1600/20170105_093028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sr5_F086eY4/WG2DqLnwFoI/AAAAAAAAKRM/qGoaN8ck_SYFf75X2zlaOHMnMFVgEH7LQCPcB/s400/20170105_093028.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QbISDA_7zmM/WG2D15eUMkI/AAAAAAAAKRM/F0YouVvyPUcxxJbF4yBV8nMQOLo41_tYACPcB/s1600/20170105_092937.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QbISDA_7zmM/WG2D15eUMkI/AAAAAAAAKRM/F0YouVvyPUcxxJbF4yBV8nMQOLo41_tYACPcB/s400/20170105_092937.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ample airflow and venting provides a relatively cool and fog free experience, and surprisingly, not too noisy. Don't kid yourself, there is no such thing as a quiet helmet, the name of the game is to find one that is 'less bad.' I would report better venting, less fogging and noticeably quieter than the Shoei XR1100. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Furthermore, with the race cut and small lip at the rear, the K5 is remarkably stable when on the bike at speed - no buffeting or pressure build up which can make other helmets feel heavy or shake when getting on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The internal padding uses natural bamboo and latex fibres meaning a comfortable skin feel which won't become humid and sweaty in hot conditions. The bucket of the helmet has the usual memory foam found in most lids and after a few rides this breaks in well. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />The Bad.</h3>
<div>
Luckily I wear contact lenses, so seeing glasses are not required - however if they were - you'd be shit out of luck.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The K5 advertises a 'Glasses Fit' slot located on the temple of each cheek pad - a fairly standard feature and design and one which fails completely with the AGV. In the past I would often wear riding glasses with a high contrast yellow lens to offset the smoke visor in dim conditions. No longer it would seem.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O3Ryjiqddb8/WG2GcuN1Y3I/AAAAAAAAKQE/YyUVt8iWegMQhytL9OAcE6V5BmAQc6WOwCPcB/s1600/20170105_101829.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="336" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O3Ryjiqddb8/WG2GcuN1Y3I/AAAAAAAAKQE/YyUVt8iWegMQhytL9OAcE6V5BmAQc6WOwCPcB/s400/20170105_101829.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Something about the angle and height of the glasses channel makes it impossible for me to use glasses of any kind with this helmet. Inserting the glasses arms is painful as you try to force them past the soft piece of your noggin at the temple. Furthermore, if you do succeed, the glasses lens will be hovering somewhere around your eyebrows - not your eyes. Useless. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Continuing the theme - the internal sun shade is pathetic, both in contrast and position. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KaJZ7OdPPGY/WG2A7c00J9I/AAAAAAAAKQU/21sFwfYpCTkkar4QXvYZTKKnZ5aCJcIEgCPcB/s1600/20170105_100230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KaJZ7OdPPGY/WG2A7c00J9I/AAAAAAAAKQU/21sFwfYpCTkkar4QXvYZTKKnZ5aCJcIEgCPcB/s400/20170105_100230.jpg" width="295" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The bottom of the shade terminates just below your eye socket on your cheekbones, delivering distractingly bright reflected light straight into your pinholes. Oh good, that helps........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Further failure is observed in the contrast the shade provides - which is not much. Honestly, you're better off not using this (or removing it which is possible) and just installing a smoke visor as I have done. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Conclusion. </h3>
<div>
The AGV K5 offers some solid features and top notch fit and finish for a mid range helmet. At this price point some shortcomings are forgivable and the lack of a carbon-composite shell is understandable. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Would I recommend it? Absolutely, unless of course, you wear glasses.</div>

I’m ashamed to say
I hadn’t yet introduced the MT-09 to the Great Ocean Road (GOR) –
one of Victoria's - and indeed Australia’s - must ride roads.</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Although it has been
raining for 3 days straight and the weather today is less than ideal
I am stubborn and determined enough to get the Gimp suit on and get this long overdue introduction done.
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Kissing the wife goodbye and giving the little one a smile I hit the black stuff at
6:50 am – there’s a lot of road to cover.
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The first 1.5 hour
slab to Torquay is completed without incident – stopping for fuel I
gunnel the tank and check the radar. High wind – but no rain – I
wonder if this will in fact equate to ‘Dry’…….hmmm.</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Before one can begin
the GOR ‘proper’ the gratuitous Split Point lighthouse stop is
required – this is our Mecca and the icons must be acknowledge.
Pfffft……..nah.</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0a3eEaaZr5I/WDe_zeGMTfI/AAAAAAAAJqM/YJvr3zjaNGcG7OitFEnUIdB3CyKFmz0ZACPcB/s1600/20161125_091708_001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0a3eEaaZr5I/WDe_zeGMTfI/AAAAAAAAJqM/YJvr3zjaNGcG7OitFEnUIdB3CyKFmz0ZACPcB/s400/20161125_091708_001.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
That said, this
lighthouse is a bit of a silver screen star and was the setting of
the ever popular ‘Round the Twist’ children's series – a TV show
which is a right of passage for my generation of Aussie-Kid.
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K-quCCLA-vA/WDe_zdkBgmI/AAAAAAAAJqQ/pgj_pZREzCYdxh-0S8g7N82clSkK207WwCPcB/s1600/20161125_092526.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-K-quCCLA-vA/WDe_zdkBgmI/AAAAAAAAJqQ/pgj_pZREzCYdxh-0S8g7N82clSkK207WwCPcB/s400/20161125_092526.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Right then. Stop faffing about - it's clobbering time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Aireys Inlet to Lorne defines the warm-up section of the GOR - with spectacular views left and forward vision filled with a black snake tracing the coastline, the appetite is tending to Braaarp. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jC2CPy1CKdg/WDe_zQOvNKI/AAAAAAAAJsU/kK_7z9931JgQia_1JlppiRFsBX1TwGv9wCPcB/s1600/20161125_094621.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jC2CPy1CKdg/WDe_zQOvNKI/AAAAAAAAJsU/kK_7z9931JgQia_1JlppiRFsBX1TwGv9wCPcB/s400/20161125_094621.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've had our wettest recorded Spring in Victoria for the last 30 years - oh joy - as such, the GOR has copped a beating. Landslides had closed large sections between Lorne and Apollo Bay, sections now open albeit under repair. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It must be said, the road surface is shocking. It is pock-marked, pitted and rutted - there are gravel washouts and divots, large stone chips and, oh yeah - single lane road works. Settling into any form of rhythm is farken impossible, and with frustration breeding petulance, things are getting sketchy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So we climb a little further out, and head towards the Otways. Maybe we'll have more luck?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Backtracking slightly I point the 'Niner to some inland delights via Skenes Creek on a coast to farm transition. The low lying Rain Forest road has also seen some heavy rain and is dicey at best - nothing else for it, climb higher and head out to the open plains. </div>

<br />
<br />
There has been a lot of construction along parts of my commute. Melbourne is a very progressive City - as such it is hard to find a Suburban or Metro street which has not succumbed to some form of development.<br />
<br />
Great for Melbourne, not so great for a Moto Commuter.<br />
<br />
In the past 2 months I've managed to pickup 2 items which would cause a puncture. Luckily the first item was a small staple which was not long enough to penetrate the Tyre carcass and was safely pulled without any ill-affects. I was not so lucky this time.<br />
<br />
Time to bust out the 'ol GRYYP repair kit and get to work removing my cheeky little hitchhiker.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-88cDrPp_2ns/WABkQHdLeVI/AAAAAAAAIlU/M-U57aE43zM_X1WnCnpIBszwQDdW6fpBACPcB/s1600/20161014_154926.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-88cDrPp_2ns/WABkQHdLeVI/AAAAAAAAIlU/M-U57aE43zM_X1WnCnpIBszwQDdW6fpBACPcB/s400/20161014_154926.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JLZ0RCFhebI/WABkaeA7tEI/AAAAAAAAIlY/OzcI1n7ja44AMQOxMmZLK0wdlOE_DIjYwCPcB/s1600/20161014_154811.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JLZ0RCFhebI/WABkaeA7tEI/AAAAAAAAIlY/OzcI1n7ja44AMQOxMmZLK0wdlOE_DIjYwCPcB/s400/20161014_154811.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>Step 1</b><br />
Pull the item using the needle nose pliers - if you're doing this road side and want to minimise pressure loss, have the rasp tool ready to stop escaping air.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b_7zIHXE2ko/WABnB6vc4UI/AAAAAAAAImM/AsRK-PGVUfMwENNhhEuHaht6DUkxGFotgCPcB/s1600/20161014_150519.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-b_7zIHXE2ko/WABnB6vc4UI/AAAAAAAAImM/AsRK-PGVUfMwENNhhEuHaht6DUkxGFotgCPcB/s400/20161014_150519.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Clearly this nail was long enough to pierce the carcass.......damn. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 2</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Use the rasp tool to clean out the puncture site. You are intentionally trying to make the hole larger and, depending on the area of the Tyre, are likely going to need to push through the reinforcing belts/material. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This can be quite strenuous but don't rush - you need to make sure the hole is clear and ready to receive the plug. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cTYBqj-dRnM/WABm6n2a2HI/AAAAAAAAImE/Bv2Sp0PhQocERZEycuQjgCTvf-ccjRFTgCPcB/s1600/20161014_150529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cTYBqj-dRnM/WABm6n2a2HI/AAAAAAAAImE/Bv2Sp0PhQocERZEycuQjgCTvf-ccjRFTgCPcB/s400/20161014_150529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 3</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Prepare a wax-cord 'plug' on the insertion tool and drive the plug 2/3 of the length into the Tyre. This is going to require significant force, be determined. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The idea is that you want the cord loop to drop inside the Tyre and create an internal plug too large to work its way back through the original hole, similar to how a dynabolt works. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e-vwG9So9Ng/WABwsjeetzI/AAAAAAAAImg/dD-hmfmA4rgG_9bBxvUIuvH0_hZScA8HQCPcB/s1600/dynabolt.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="235" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e-vwG9So9Ng/WABwsjeetzI/AAAAAAAAImg/dD-hmfmA4rgG_9bBxvUIuvH0_hZScA8HQCPcB/s320/dynabolt.png" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 4</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In one swift movement - pull the insertion tool out of the Tyre. You should have the cord remain in place as a plug. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Use the craft knife to trim some of the excess and leave ~3mm of cord exposed - with riding this will be forced into a kind of 'surface' patch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 5</b> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Add air, test pressure.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 6</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ride, retest pressure when warm - it should have increased and, if done correctly, should hold steady. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rsv2rBs0e4Q/WABkjm7rNDI/AAAAAAAAIlc/a3SUkzAqCBoZgH0poG1M0eN9I1Zk9qajQCPcB/s1600/20161014_154657.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rsv2rBs0e4Q/WABkjm7rNDI/AAAAAAAAIlc/a3SUkzAqCBoZgH0poG1M0eN9I1Zk9qajQCPcB/s400/20161014_154657.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It should be noted that this type of plug is technically only to be used to repair a Tyre to get you out of trouble. The manufacturers state that, for a 'proper' repair, the Tyre must be stripped from the rim and plugged internally with a mushroom plug or similar. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm only about 500kms from my next scheduled service so will take care of that then. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
........so long, you cheeky little hitchhiker. </div>
BitSarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17549482632949720942noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5621725284924042843.post-22540890623054117192016-08-25T15:11:00.000+10:002016-08-25T18:07:25.428+10:00Evotech Performance: radiator guardThe radiator is a vulnerable component on any motorcycle. Exacerbated by the fact they are almost always located directly behind the front wheel, providing an uninterrupted view to debris. Hmmmm.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A holed radiator will really ruin your day. </div>
<div>
Coolant can be extremely slippery and can take you down before you've realised you have a temperature spike, not to mention the issues with running a bike with a dry cooling system. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Time to mitigate this risk with a radiator guard. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Be aware, a radiator guard is not a panacea - it will deflect small rocks and various road detritus, along with bugs - but anything significantly large or determined will get through and cause damage. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Right then. Introducing the <a href="http://www.evotech-performance.com/yamaha-mt-09-2013-onwards-radiator-guard" target="_blank">Evotech Performance radiator guard</a>. </div>
<div>
The company provides a set of 'instructions' via the <a href="http://www.evotech-performance.com/media/uploads/11298YamahaMT09RadiatorGuardInstructionsRev2.pdf" target="_blank">online PDF</a> (a printed copy is not included) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the most part, the instructions are OK - although they do gloss over a fair bit of detail. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Time for an install post. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
All the required pieces are included, the aluminium brackets are of high quality, as is the hardware and fixings. I appreciate the steel inserts in place of aluminium threads on the guard grill, it shows thought and intent has gone into the design. Gold Star @Evotech. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j2fNGIM_Vio/V75ef_VU_cI/AAAAAAAAIFU/3wHqe5tJ114e7QR9fNehOYZeBmM7aWjyQCPcB/s1600/20160825_113953.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j2fNGIM_Vio/V75ef_VU_cI/AAAAAAAAIFU/3wHqe5tJ114e7QR9fNehOYZeBmM7aWjyQCPcB/s400/20160825_113953.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First thing to note is that the guard grill is not square. This is not a manufacturing flaw, this is deliberate. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The grill is a stamped piece of aluminium, as such it is extremely lightweight. The purposeful twist has been created to introduce rigidity when mounted square, thereby providing tension across the face of the guard. Again, thoughtful design. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cMqDGTOrANs/V75tNxDa5kI/AAAAAAAAIG4/zFSuorE-k_sW6E2fYBJyM5Jyw-zuX3G7ACPcB/s1600/gaurd-bent.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="238" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cMqDGTOrANs/V75tNxDa5kI/AAAAAAAAIG4/zFSuorE-k_sW6E2fYBJyM5Jyw-zuX3G7ACPcB/s400/gaurd-bent.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before getting started I recommend cleaning the radiator fins to remove any existing crud and to ensure the surfaces where you will adhere the anti-vibration strips are clean. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ye_INHhXGcw/V75eKhs2qGI/AAAAAAAAIFk/mZgTCtvalHELNsNpmtioSlEqIYbhuVIdACPcB/s1600/20160825_114832.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="363" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ye_INHhXGcw/V75eKhs2qGI/AAAAAAAAIFk/mZgTCtvalHELNsNpmtioSlEqIYbhuVIdACPcB/s400/20160825_114832.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Two brackets are included, one with 2 holes for the right side, one with 1 hole for the left side (rider perspective). The right side goes on first, seated underneath the stock mounting points, in direct contact with the radiator back plate. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AvldTbTLAYE/V75dwPZ4LkI/AAAAAAAAIGs/0-zuybccoj8hBk_TXkgvIUiC9o8HZFa2wCPcB/s1600/20160825_120332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AvldTbTLAYE/V75dwPZ4LkI/AAAAAAAAIGs/0-zuybccoj8hBk_TXkgvIUiC9o8HZFa2wCPcB/s400/20160825_120332.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is important to note - as it is not explicitly declared in the instructions - you must use the supplied hardware when installing the brackets, <b><u>do not reuse the stock hardware</u></b>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you compare the length of the threads, the provided M6 fixings are longer to account for the added offset introduced by the thickness of the brackets.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Get everything in place and finger-tight, <b><u>do not snug down yet</u></b>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mFsBk4LZkHY/V75vqp-5WnI/AAAAAAAAIHY/VDiDm4KW3Ggv7UTClvddhXDjeNU8a_LQwCPcB/s1600/hardware.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mFsBk4LZkHY/V75vqp-5WnI/AAAAAAAAIHY/VDiDm4KW3Ggv7UTClvddhXDjeNU8a_LQwCPcB/s400/hardware.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up, cut the anti-vibration strip in half and adhere to the face of the radiator where there is a ridge. Do this on both sides. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Install the washer onto the M4 hex bolts and locate them on the guard. At this stage, the left side has not been touched at all (other than sticking on the padded strip).</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The left-hand side is a bit different in approach. Instead of installing the bracket, then attaching the guard grill, you first locate the grill - attached to the bracket - before bolting the bracket to the rear plate of the radiator. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZoSvWkZqZto/V75dEOQjcJI/AAAAAAAAIGY/WZa5D3t_m3MQXxNpXITTuYFX1MWMTfvigCPcB/s1600/20160825_122835.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZoSvWkZqZto/V75dEOQjcJI/AAAAAAAAIGY/WZa5D3t_m3MQXxNpXITTuYFX1MWMTfvigCPcB/s640/20160825_122835.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is where the designed twist becomes obvious. Once you align the grill and left-hand bracket with the mounting point there is a noticeable stiffness, giving confidence you've done things right. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Refit the last (supplied) M6 bolt finger-tight and inspect your work before snugging all fixings down. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b style="text-decoration: underline;">Note - do not over torque any of the hardware. </b>The M6 bolts are threading into the back plate of the radiator and can quite easily strip the treads if over tightened. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Likewise, the M4 hex bolts are being wound into steal lugs within and aluminium eye in the guard grill - leaning on these fasteners is likely to sheer the lugs out. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<i><span style="font-size: x-small;">I am in no way associated with any vendors, workshops, product distributors or component manufactures cited in this Post. </span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-size: x-small;">All components and workshop costs have been completely at my own expense. </span></i><br />
<br />
Like many others, I had suffered with the lack-lustre chassis dynamics of the MT09 for too long. It is universally understood that if you intend on pushing this bike - and want to attain the most giggles from the experience, rather than sheer terror - you will need to get rid of the pipe-cleaner fork internals and slinky shock.<br />
<br />
For day to day riding, commuting, wheelies and a bit of blatting you can <i><u>just</u></i> get by if you're not too liberal with the throttle, you contain your enthusiasm and find inner Zen whilst channelling the persona of a Prius driver.......but, wait! That's not what an MT09 is for, Zen? No thanks.<br />
<br />
Something had to be done.<br />
<h3>
<b><br /></b><b>The Parts</b></h3>
Researching potential upgrade paths, weighing up total cost, expected results and anticipated performance was not without its challenges. The choices ranged from cannibalising components such as a ZX10 or FZY-R6 shock for (custom) retrofitting, to complete disassembly, servicing, re-valving and general suspension Voodoo for both the front and rear.<br />
<br />
My main issue with these approaches was that the minimal cost saving could deliver a haphazard, untested and ultimately less precise result. The Frankenstein contraption meter was getting too far into the red zone for my OCD. Nope, nope, nope.<br />
<br />
Enter the <a href="https://www.omniaracing.net/en/andreani-kit-advanced-cartridge-shock-absorber-ohlins-for-yamaha-2013-p-20037.html" target="_blank">Kit Advanced</a>. A purpose made, specifically designed pairing (with joint R&D) between Andreani and Ohlins.<br />
<br />
Oh yes, that will do just nicely. Farken nicely.<br />
<br />
As noted, these components are a straight swap for the shock with no modification required and a fork internal drop-out and cartridge drop-in.<br />
<br />
The Ohlins YA-335 (<a href="https://www.ohlins.eu/en/products/motorcycle/ya-335--4736/" target="_blank">S46DR1</a>) shock is a fairly basic emulsion-type unit with easy to adjust rebound damping and pre-load - compression damping is not available.<br />

<h3>
<b>The People</b></h3>
Being located in Melbourne, I was lucky enough to be able to call upon <a href="https://www.ptr.com.au/" target="_blank">Phil Tainton Racing</a> to have the suspension upgrade completed. For those who don't know who PTR is/are - they've been in the business for decades and Phil has developed bikes for road racing and factory teams.<br />
<br />
So I just <b>had</b> to have the man work on my bike because...........overkill?<br />
<br />
Phil is a bit of a Wizard and a bloody nice guy. He took the time to explain things and conducted the process formally requiring rider (that means me) weigh in, suspension dyno - before and after - and chassis set-up. All to ensure the results were not snake oil or due to positive-bias but were in fact measurable.<br />
<br />
Documentation provided - the inner geek satisfied, OCD meter in a very happy zone - thanks PTR!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aPAabAIzauM/V7fMGCR2ViI/AAAAAAAAIAs/reouur_H-0cRwQ5Zou5L_kwgBmmcNC3ugCPcB/s1600/20160820_125152.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aPAabAIzauM/V7fMGCR2ViI/AAAAAAAAIAs/reouur_H-0cRwQ5Zou5L_kwgBmmcNC3ugCPcB/s400/20160820_125152.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The communication from this workshop was exemplary - Lynne kept me up to date with parts delivery, progress and handled everything seamlessly. Stella work, rarely seen, ever required.<br />
<br />
<h3>
<b>The Progression </b></h3>
<div>
It's been just over 3 months since the PTR work. During this time the MT09 has been subject to upward of 6,000 kms of commuting, blatting, braaaarping and hooligan-ing. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The results are night and day - seriously. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pogo be-gone. That familiar chassis wallow has been eliminated and I am no longer required to ride around the deficiency. I can trust the bike far more - it now has a footprint, it is planted and I am connected - think bare foot running as opposed to sprinting in gumboots.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Corner entry and exit speeds have improved and I am less fatigued after a hectic ride as the chassis is now doing what it should be doing. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fork dive under hard braking is greatly improved and trail-braking delivers swift turn-in without the fear of bottoming out. Furthermore, with both compression and rebound damping the fork action upon loading and unloading offers continuous feedback and compliance. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
High velocity compression can be a little harsh due to the valve-porting. Really though you only notice this after touch-down from a ham-fisted wheelie or hitting a pothole at speed.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Rear squat is gone. Just plain gone. </div>
<div>
When getting on the power at corner exit the shock remains taught and does not let the rear go light as it attempts to retreat towards the swing-arm pivot. The slightly longer shaft has also improved handling by lifting the rear, canting weight forward. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Do not underestimate the impact a relatively small geometry change can have on chassis dynamics. By lifting the rear, the rake has been marginally reduced, while weight over the front axle has been increased - both factors delivering much better front-end feel and feedback. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uNPXOCBsA7Q/V7fEER4DpoI/AAAAAAAAIBI/V1Oae69UFbUbMTJ6ynKP2opXIUR2_uRzgCPcB/s1600/20160820_092109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uNPXOCBsA7Q/V7fEER4DpoI/AAAAAAAAIBI/V1Oae69UFbUbMTJ6ynKP2opXIUR2_uRzgCPcB/s400/20160820_092109.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<h3>
<b>Conclusion</b></h3>
<div>
<ul>
<li>If you're thinking about suspension work for your MT09.</li>
<li>If you take you're riding seriously and enjoy the innate technicality of it.</li>
<li>If you've had a moment, more than once, where you wished you could open the throttle and trust it to stick. </li>
<li>If you want to really get the most of the flickable chassis.</li>
<li>If you want more giggles and less terror</li>
</ul>
<div>
Get your suspension sorted. </div>

<div>
Done and done. </div>

The time had come to finally throw a leg over the Yamaha XSR900, let's do it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RE7f0dk44Uw/V5xDYf8bLNI/AAAAAAAAH28/cF5y0jg-WgYZuGkHBVe1fyAWFVEaHoIRwCKgB/s1600/20160730_115714.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RE7f0dk44Uw/V5xDYf8bLNI/AAAAAAAAH28/cF5y0jg-WgYZuGkHBVe1fyAWFVEaHoIRwCKgB/s400/20160730_115714.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<h3>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Motor/Throttle/Clutch + Gearbox</span></b></h3>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
Built upon the MT09 platform, the XSR900 shares the same delightful 847cc triple pot engine with claimed power and torque output figures unchanged, indicating nothing internal has been modified or substituted for this incarnation.<br />
<br />
Out of the crate, the XSR900 throttle response is tamer to that of the MT09, it's still far from perfect - especially on small throttle transitions - however in stock form, it is better, smoother, softer?<br />
<br />
Clutch action and gearbox feel are identical to that of the 'Niner, that said, the XSR900 seems to have a much quieter clutch basket and does not produce the same rattle the MT09 does when in neutral with the lever out.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<h3>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Handling/Brakes/Suspension</span></b></h3>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
Right, have Yamaha sorted out the budget suspension this time....................?? Ah, that'd be No.<br />
<br />
It is true to state that the stock suspension of the XSR900 is improved to that of the MT09 - however, it's still very basic.<br />
<br />
The front has much better rebound damping due to a valve change, however without changes to the overall configuration this can only help so much. Dual-spring rate offers a stiffer feel with less dive under braking, however there is no compression damping at all. That said, the XSR900 is better behaved than a stock 09.<br />
<br />
At the rear the shock continues unchanged and suffers from the familiar squat and untamed unload when getting on the throttle.<br />
<br />
The ABS brakes front and back have acceptable lever feel and pull up well, nothing to complain about for this type of bike.<br />
<br />
In terms of road manners, the XSR is relatively compliant, albeit a little vague. It'll go where you point it, it just won't give you confidence you're heading there on your terms or as directed.<br />
<br />
The three stage traction control intervenes quite early on TC2 (max) and it'll chop a wheelie before you get going, other than that it was a non-issue. Just bump the setting up to TC1 (min) or TC0 (off) and you'll be fine.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<h3>
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Seat/Comfort</span></b></h3>
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
Now this is strange.<br />
<br />
The seat is higher than the 09 and set further back with a wider tank between the rider and the bars, requiring one to stretch a bit more to wrangle the controls.<br />
<br />
Furthermore the plastic tank covers minimise the amount of cutout in the tank around the inner thigh and knee area - exactly where you would pinch your knees.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G8cP9u095nE/V5xDMOYCkwI/AAAAAAAAH28/rCz_IP3vPdccCEe5aCj_xvK4RTSZ1lWqQCKgB/s1600/20160730_115740.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G8cP9u095nE/V5xDMOYCkwI/AAAAAAAAH28/rCz_IP3vPdccCEe5aCj_xvK4RTSZ1lWqQCKgB/s400/20160730_115740.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It's odd, but this design makes it feel like there is a 'puck' attached to the tank and it produces a very noticeable lump when trying to lock to the bike.<br />
<br /></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;">In Conclusion </span></h3>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The XSR900 is a great thing to look at, I personally love the aesthetics of the bike and think Yamaha have really melded current technology with retro style in a remarkably pleasing way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the central clock style dash - it's extremely clear and adds to the bikes' retro appeal with a Casio Calculator feel. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The aluminium pieces provide both visual accents and a real differentiation from other bikes of this type, almost like a 'factory custom' look - I dig it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like for like, the XSR900 is a softer, more agreeable and more civilised member of the MT family, perhaps the distinguished Uncle, rather than older brother - after all the MT10 is here and the XSR is not trying to be a brawler.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Post Script</span></h3>
<div>
Riding this bike back to back with my MT09 it was very hard to remain objective, and being essentially the same bike, it was difficult not to draw comparisons. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Let it be known that my 'Niner is no longer stock and has been treated to suspension work and a minor throttle adjustment.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was actually quite vindicating to ride the XSR900 which is proclaimed to be a more refined package in comparison to a sorted MT09, with the suspension upgrades and throttle tweak the MT09 is propelled into another league - seriously (more about this in a coming post) </div>

<br />
<b>A</b> - 'Assault' mode = hooliganism and hammer time in the twisties<br />
<b>STD</b> - 'Standard' mode = bike default setting and good for the commute and touring<br />
<b>B</b> - 'Benign' mode = great for rain and sketchy road surfaces<br />
<br />
Key, Lid, Gear - go.<br />

3,500 Kms is distance enough to form an opinion of a Tyre. The boots in question? Pirelli Angel GT.</div>
<div>
Scratch that - not an opinion, an informed and measured assessment. Let's do it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">Pressure</span></u></b><br />
<div>
Tyre pressure is both objective and subjective. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is objective in the sense that manufacturer prescribed pressures give a rider a starting point - rightly or wrongly. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It is subjective in the sense that most riders will disagree with these (usually overly high) prescribed pressures and run their own tyres lower. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5_uHbcEQsoA/VzQeyFfMtZI/AAAAAAAAHBE/Fh5x4b_M1xUxDOaOYkhbCi1WePpKeHs9wCKgB/s1600/tyres.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="187" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5_uHbcEQsoA/VzQeyFfMtZI/AAAAAAAAHBE/Fh5x4b_M1xUxDOaOYkhbCi1WePpKeHs9wCKgB/s320/tyres.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For completeness, both the Yamaha owners' manual and the Pirelli Angel GT specified pressures are Front/Rear (F/R - 36/42)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Where (kgf/cm^2) is the same unit measurement as BAR</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aw7yJuvDBVo/VzQeyBXxswI/AAAAAAAAHBE/9SRe8vPKRhImvzWPfzXeiTQEjVOZF_cmgCKgB/s1600/PirelliTyre.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="170" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aw7yJuvDBVo/VzQeyBXxswI/AAAAAAAAHBE/9SRe8vPKRhImvzWPfzXeiTQEjVOZF_cmgCKgB/s400/PirelliTyre.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Considering the lightweight of the MT-09, F/R 36/42 psi is on the high side, even for Sport Touring tyres such as the Angel GT. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This will not do. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<br />
I've got a route of approx 250kms planned for a shakedown, a mix of coastal flowing roads into climbing technical with some back road shenanigans peppered throughout. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">Tools for the 'job'</span></u></b></div>
<div>
Tools is somewhat of a generous term - all you need is a calibrated Tyre Pressure gauge and a good quality floor pump. I use a Slime digital pressure gauge and my trusty old Lezyne push-bike pump.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8lp2NY55n1o/VzP8qEJ7eHI/AAAAAAAAG_s/wYGITkO8us4JUWaGVeay4a5HqxQiUM4swCKgB/s1600/20160512_134039.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8lp2NY55n1o/VzP8qEJ7eHI/AAAAAAAAG_s/wYGITkO8us4JUWaGVeay4a5HqxQiUM4swCKgB/s400/20160512_134039.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NTdC7l0ahaw/VzQcaX7mraI/AAAAAAAAHBE/-tMWIxiYRL8EV0P4U5RBlwAbY8zC6clzgCKgB/s1600/20160512_154718.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NTdC7l0ahaw/VzQcaX7mraI/AAAAAAAAHBE/-tMWIxiYRL8EV0P4U5RBlwAbY8zC6clzgCKgB/s400/20160512_154718.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using a digital gauge I can easily calibrate the device as necessary - this however is not essential. If using a mechanical or slide gauge, you may not know its calibration point or accuracy. It may sound strange, but this does not matter too much - as long as you know "F/R 32/34 on <b>my</b> gauge feels right to <b>me"</b> you'll be fine. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Me? I'm anal retentive and like to know (as much as possible) that my readings have an acceptable error margin and are somewhat close to reality. I setup at F/R 34/36 before hitting the black stuff.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b><u>Attitude and performance</u></b></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Being a Sport Touring tyre - if you're looking for super grippy, soft and sticky boots then you're looking in the wrong place. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That said, the Angels warm up relatively quickly and offer acceptable grip, albeit with a wooden feel and slow tip in. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The early morning run along the coast provided a mix of sweepers and tighter cliff-top roads. Conditions were wet and cold, high wind, trivial rain and road spray with some gravel washouts in the corners. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HI4z6bonmFg/VzPmVcmF4TI/AAAAAAAAG8M/oKV5I-7v0BIPeLVNlNJJlg9aviyCSYTuACKgB/s1600/20160512_100104.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HI4z6bonmFg/VzPmVcmF4TI/AAAAAAAAG8M/oKV5I-7v0BIPeLVNlNJJlg9aviyCSYTuACKgB/s400/20160512_100104.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Angels gripped well enough, changing direction without duress. On corner exit I was comfortable opening the throttle whilst still pitched over with moderate lean-angle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Changing pace I head through back roads on the way to some more technical hills, opportunity enough for wheelies and shenanigans. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ooSwxHuOsW8/VzPlVsF6VWI/AAAAAAAAG7k/h2I4yf69YEQLmTEQjxU_j-SeX8ZeBTRdACKgB/s1600/20160512_111807.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ooSwxHuOsW8/VzPlVsF6VWI/AAAAAAAAG7k/h2I4yf69YEQLmTEQjxU_j-SeX8ZeBTRdACKgB/s400/20160512_111807.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rear picks up strongly when ripping the throttle to loft the front skyward, the front tyre touching down with immediate grip producing a subtle headshake. No problems here. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As the roads continue to dry out I push the Angels more - to be fair, dry grip and feel is not great, I would report less feedback and road/rider feel than offered by the Michelin Pilot Road 3s I was running on the Aprilia. Significantly less. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Climbing into the technical section of the ride, I shift back in the saddle, get my weight over the front, move the balls of my feet to the outside of the pegs, grip the tank with my knees - wrap the throttle - Braaaarp. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g5afMCJqe2A/VzPoojnApHI/AAAAAAAAHBY/syf_cNFrN98vZjEPn4cMWcaeZgXzJ21UQCKgB/s1600/20160512_094223.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g5afMCJqe2A/VzPoojnApHI/AAAAAAAAHBY/syf_cNFrN98vZjEPn4cMWcaeZgXzJ21UQCKgB/s400/20160512_094223.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Performing a sighting lap reveals a dry and relatively clean road surface - there are some gravel patches on some of the straight sections but the corners are clear. Game on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I get busy running this section of road over the next hour, taking some pressure readings as the tyres warm up. By the end of the 'session' they had picked up ~5+%</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Going harder on the Angels is not a linear experience. The attitude of the tyre changes from a slow and neutral tip in, to a sudden falling into the corners as the front pushes wide. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On corner exit, the rear does put the Yamaha's power down well and I was relatively confident opening the throttle progressively whilst pitched over. Increase throttle whilst decreasing steering rate.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><u><span style="font-size: large;">Findings</span></u></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Pirelli Angel GTs offer reasonable wet grip and reasonable dry grip. Unfortunately, the amount of dry grip and feel being sacrificed does not legitimise the wet performance on offer. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
During the early components of the test today the roads were wet, but not excessively. The 3,500 kms travelled so far have seen far worse conditions in heavy rain, as such - the wet performance of this tyre has been demonstrated considerably. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While exploring the available grip, the overall road/rider feel is wooden with minimal feedback. I have had the rear let go on more than one occasion in hot/dry conditions during the previous kilometres travelled. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That said, I still managed to give them a good flogging today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is important to mention that the MT-09 suspension really is not up to the task of the motor and chassis geometry. Some of the shortfalls I have experienced will no doubt be attributed to these lack-lustre chassis dynamics. </div>

I'd been deliberating for some time on which screen to get for the MT-09: OEM of after-market?<br />
<br />
There are some tasty offerings available from the likes of Barracuda, PUIG, Ermax and - of course - Rizoma. But in the end, the OEM screen won out for its minimal styling and seamless integration with the bike.<br />
<br />
To be honest, the decision to add the screen was primarily aesthetic - form over function. A small 'Hat' to tie the front instrument cluster and bar taper together. Well what a surprise I got.<br />
<br />
This innocuous ~30cm square piece of Yamaha stamped plastic cuts wind quite dramatically. Who knew! <br />
<br />
Installation was a breeze - 5 minutes is all it took to remove and refit the stock 10mm hex bolts for the mounting brackets and 4 Philips-head screws for the screen itself.<br />
<br />
Time to take the Hat for a Blat.....<br />
<br />
I took off this morning towards the hills - conditions were a little sketchy in parts, damp with stringy bark and gravel in the corners.<br />
<br />
I found some dry roads on the way home which gave me the opportunity to open the taps and see how the screen deflected high-speed air. Quite a difference, less helmet noise, less turbulence. Game on.<br />
<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Today was the day for the annual Black Dog Ride to raise money and awareness for mental health and depression. No more of a worthy cause for a bike rally. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This year the ride was somewhat of a mystery - organised by a new ride leader who was keeping rather quiet during the event lead up. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Upon arrival at the start point at a well known, and somewhat polarising, Melbourne bike seller in Ringwood - it was announced that the ride was being led and marshalled by a 'Hog' club. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
AKA: Pirates........</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D2aWUo_Mdn4/Vu4u1isKMLI/AAAAAAAAGco/eGXdttsy5LgtrJBz_pA41ntZ0OrBpyNfQ/s1600/pirates.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-D2aWUo_Mdn4/Vu4u1isKMLI/AAAAAAAAGco/eGXdttsy5LgtrJBz_pA41ntZ0OrBpyNfQ/s400/pirates.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All jokes aside, the ride is for a good cause - but this style of riding in not my cup of tea. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I am a firm believer that a motorcycle should be able to corner with relative proficiency. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pirates do not corner - they vaguely navigate port or starboard.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
End result - a very slow paced ride on very boring roads.......</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I will say no more and just leave this here.....</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
In the garage, locked away, the 'Night Brawler' seduces. Tick, tock... <br />
<br />
I have limited time tonight for a quick session of social disobedience - notwithstanding the silly season and the increased VicPol presence, the draw of the MT-09 is too great.<br />
<br />
Lid. Gloves. Keys: Gone.<br />
<br />
Light is fading, the last sliver of sunlight has already retreated over the horizon - setting off on the night side of dusk I skip the coastal road and head directly for the docks of Melbourne.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KAX0L6VbqEg/Vnku2y22zKI/AAAAAAAAGCQ/J7df8sWpNSI/s1600/upload_-1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KAX0L6VbqEg/Vnku2y22zKI/AAAAAAAAGCQ/J7df8sWpNSI/s400/upload_-1" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Well, more or less directly. Making way, the MT demands to be toyed with. Braarrp here, wheelie there.<br />
<br />
I had put the word out to a few riding buddies before heading out, mischief likes company after all.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qc666Y1kfbw/VnkuuFsweqI/AAAAAAAAGCo/rgCIDTR9r30/s1600/upload_-1" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Qc666Y1kfbw/VnkuuFsweqI/AAAAAAAAGCo/rgCIDTR9r30/s400/upload_-1" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately tonight, time is not on my side. Fortunately I had laid eyes on some interesting places and had wet the appetite for the final installment in the 'Night Brawler' series. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"See 'ya later brother - next time" we peel off and head our separate ways. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is an innate camaraderie to motorcycling, it connects people like no other activity or pursuit I have ever been a part of. Perhaps it is due to the commitment it requires? The diligence? The obsession? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Or, maybe it's just the braaaarping......</div>

<br />
<u><b>SOLUTION:</b></u><br />
<ul>
<li>Grab keys</li>
<li>Stuff head into lid</li>
<li>Throw a leg over </li>
</ul>
<br />
Time to head out for some antics on the 'Night Brawler'<br />
<br />
Leaving the 'burbs and pointing the MT09 towards the coast, I make light work of the remaining stragglers on the evening commute. Splitting cagers like a mobile slalom course as they make disappointing progress home. Those poor bastards.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-buUO93mJA2A/VkMcgSF-r9I/AAAAAAAAFxU/8SXd-9Qcacg/s1600/20151111_195357.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-buUO93mJA2A/VkMcgSF-r9I/AAAAAAAAFxU/8SXd-9Qcacg/s400/20151111_195357.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
It's the middle of Spring and the evening is glorious.<br />
<br />
No wind, high clouds - comfortable air temperature.<br />
<br />
I arrive overlooking Port Phillip Bay just before Sunset - a nice display of the final diffused rays of Sun for today.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Across the Bay, the CBD is transitioning into night - bridges and buildings are lighting up, beckoning the MT into the Metropolis.<br />
<br />
Following the coast, people and traffic are becoming less frequent, providing an easy excuse to unleash the Akrapovic cannon.<br />
<br />
Any tunnel or overpass delivers aural delight.<br />
Braaaaarping ahead into the City.<br />
<br />
Entering the bowls of Melbourne CBD, the air changes from cool and refreshing into a muggy malevolence. Heavy. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GSLHHTi_fIg/VkMbw1BAHxI/AAAAAAAAFxA/500JF-Devcc/s1600/20151111_202904.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-GSLHHTi_fIg/VkMbw1BAHxI/AAAAAAAAFxA/500JF-Devcc/s400/20151111_202904.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
The 'Night Brawler' gets petulant, making the quietening streets her playground.<br />
<br />
I busy myself getting to places you shouldn't get to - taking opportunity without discrimination.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
After further reconnaissance for a pending 'Night Brawler: Episode 2' the hum and buzz of the Metro begins to itch - I make my escape.<br />
<br />
It's getting late now. Cold and late. I head in the direction of home - back to the suburbs - in a roundabout way. I'm not done yet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NIlZG6gsHe8/VkMbIoLxBhI/AAAAAAAAFxc/c5_MAeuIL_4/s1600/20151111_212624.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NIlZG6gsHe8/VkMbIoLxBhI/AAAAAAAAFxc/c5_MAeuIL_4/s400/20151111_212624.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
En route, on the outskirts of the city, fortune presents itself.<br />
<br />
A blacked-out scene, hard, cold, and industrial. At home aboard the urban assault vehicle of the MT09. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Riding at night is the epitome of motorcycle therapy. Your thoughts are safe in your helmet - like a sanctuary. <br />
<br />

..........stay tuned for Episode 2 BitSarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17549482632949720942noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5621725284924042843.post-5898863067857739172015-10-17T14:57:00.000+11:002015-10-17T16:11:42.846+11:00The 5, 4, 3 - MT: Living with a hooligan 5,000+ kms<br />
4 months of ownership<br />
3 Cylinders of fun<br />
<br />
I now feel qualified to give a 'living with' account of the MT-09.<br />
For objectivity, this will be broken into three components.<br />
<ol>
<li>Commuting</li>
<li>Blatting</li>
<li>Hooligan-ing</li>
</ol>
<div>
<b>Commuting:</b></div>
<div>
In all honesty, I really don't know how you'd find a better bike to commute on. Seriously. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's cheap to buy, cheap to run- and - it's a Yamaha. Dealer support, Japanese manufacturing, piece of mind - work horse. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Additional to the mundane 'will it start?' question - the MT is a weapon commuter. Upright position, forward stance, minimal rake - she'll tip in and change direction from her nose making her dance in traffic. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Her triple-pot does not lug, chug, stutter or falter. Slow speed work is a breeze with a light clutch, manageable 1st and 2nd gears, and exceptionally strong rear brake.<br />
<br />
"Traffic".....pffft - what traffic?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Done and done. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Blatting:</b></div>
<div>
Okay - the spirited weekend ride demands more attention and requires more finesse. This is true.</div>
<div>
As per my <a href="http://bitsar.blogspot.com.au/2015/08/comparo-yamaha-mt09-vs-aprilia-shiver.html" target="_blank">Comparo</a> piece, the MT will catch you out more readily than the Aprilia would have. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But, hey - that's fine. It's supposed to. </div>
<div>
The MT-09 is not a bike for the uninitiated. Sure, you can buy one as a greenie-squid, but if you push her, she's going to bite your head off.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Plain. And. Simple. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The suspension is an issue when getting on it - this is not news, not a secret - I am done talking about it. It can - and will - be fixed. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Other than that. The MT is deceptively fast and fiercely responsive with an instant throttle action.<br />
It's a good thing. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Blatting with the best of them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Hooligan-ing:</b></div>
<div>
Well....um - yeah. It's a hooligan. That's the point. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<span style="line-height: 16px;">Let me preface this with.........</span><br />
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<i><span style="line-height: 16px;">I am not a professional motorcyclist, journalist or human-being. </span></i></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><i>I am a daily commuter, weekend scratcher, sometimes tourer, ride with the hammer down, and take my riding seriously.</i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><i>I'm no track star. But have completed advanced training.</i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><i><br /></i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><i>Over time motorcycling has deeply embedded into my life and identity. </i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><i>I love my Wife, my Dogs and Bikes – people can piss off. </i></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Let's begin.............</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">….....Soooo, I've been asked - “How does the Yam stack up compared to the Ape?”</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Here goes. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: large; line-height: 16px;"><b>Motor/Throttle/Clutch</b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">It's no secret the MT09 has a stonking triple banger. It was the power-plant offered by the Yamaha which made me seriously reconsider the MT09.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The 2015 bike has the updated ECU map straight out of the crate and delivers very predicable throttle application. Yes, there is still hesitation on small throttle openings from fully closed – however it is nowhere near as snatchy as the 2013 I tested a couple of years back. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Snap the throttle open in first or second and the front will play ball. There is immediacy and torque everywhere and once you ecplipse 5-6K RPM, the Tri-Pot comes over all excited and gets going like a stabbed-rat with vengence. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">It'll pull without hesitation and keep on going. License preservation is an issue. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Off the line the front is hard to keep on the deck. Luckily smiles are free, otherwise this bike would cost you more than just tickets from the constabulary. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8aYOR4kl-MA/VcxZzKX_1PI/AAAAAAAAFZw/m6J6WQwZiBE/s1600/yamaha_337865_2014_yam_mt09_eu_vdvm1_det_028.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8aYOR4kl-MA/VcxZzKX_1PI/AAAAAAAAFZw/m6J6WQwZiBE/s400/yamaha_337865_2014_yam_mt09_eu_vdvm1_det_028.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">That said, the Aprilia is no slouch – it's just not intense. The 750 offers an engine character which can only be found in the guise of an Italian V-Twin - visceral, emotive. Strangely, unlike other V's - the Ape likes to be revved - and it needs to be.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Unfortunately it runs out of puff pretty quickly. You can't be as lazy with this motor, it demands to be ridden, in the correct gear, to realise its potential. I like that. Makes you work for the reward. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Off the bottom, the Ape is lurchy and can surge and hunt the Tacho for stability. This can be remedied somewhat through the addition of a <a href="http://bitsar.blogspot.com.au/2014/12/15t-shakedown.html" target="_blank">15T counter-shaft</a> sprocket and an A/F adjuster such as the <a href="http://bitsar.blogspot.com.au/2012/10/new-helmet-some-fatduc-adjustments.html" target="_blank">FatDuc</a>. It cannot be eliminated all together. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BKzAanoPg64/VcxZ2amOTAI/AAAAAAAAFZ4/RiT-w-_e_54/s1600/Shiver_engine-v-twin.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BKzAanoPg64/VcxZ2amOTAI/AAAAAAAAFZ4/RiT-w-_e_54/s400/Shiver_engine-v-twin.jpg" width="370" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Each bike offers 3 throttle modes which can be switched on the fly. After a while you'll just end up using the most aggressive mode on either bike. It's a nice feature, albeit somewhat unnecessary.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Both bikes have great clutch action and feel with low friction points and minimal travel. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The Yammy uses a cabled clutch with a non-adjustable lever – the reach is a little far for me and the lever length is quite long. I'm a two finger clutch guy so the stock levers are likely to be swapped out. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Conversely, the Ape uses a hydraulic clutch – a very nice one – with a light action. The stock levers are adjustable, however the lever thickness (vertical-aspect) is ridiculous – I soon swapped these for Pazzo's and never looked back. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><b>Results</b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Yamaha = 9/10 </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Aprilia = 6/10</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: large; line-height: 16px;"><b>Handling/Brakes/Suspension</b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">We'll get the easy one out of the way first – brakes. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Both bikes are equipped with non-switchable ABS. Both implementations are good. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">As a commuter ABS is nice to have, especially on those cold, wet and traffic clogged mornings when cagers are particularly unpredictable and moronic. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Not something to rely on. Not Ever. But nice to have. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Out in the hills, the ABS does not dilute braking power or performance. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">No problem with the brakes on either bike. If you want or need to stop, you will – no doubt. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">These bikes can and do stop much harder than you'll be prepared for. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The suspension and handling characteristics is where the Yamaha and Aprilia differ the most. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Firstly, the Yamaha's suspension is comedy. It's like having pipe-cleaners up front and a pogo-stick in the rear. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">I've dialed it in as much as possible on the stock boingers and for the daily grind, popping wheelies and the urban environment, it's fine, OK, manageable, acceptable? </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Hmmm....up to maybe 8/10 pace and commitment. then it gets a bit wild. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">I've had to adjust the way I ride somewhat and recalibrate my expectations – that's not entirely a bad thing as it required me to learn how to get on with the bike. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The MT09 will tip in on a knife-edge and can change direction via thought alone, it just demands more work and finesse to keep it compliant. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Trail-braking is key to get weight over the front when pushing harder. Brake application and release must be deliberate in order to load and unload the suspension as progressively as possible – being severely under-damped this is quite a chore. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">When on pace it gets a little shabby – if you intend on taking this bike to the track you'll need suspension work. For sure. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The chassis is compact and taught. the seat height is low – you are very much a part of the bike – this is a good thing.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sXBSB1fAVQM/VcxfTUxEwVI/AAAAAAAAFaU/cshzC-AN_5o/s1600/yamaha_337732_2014_yam_mt09_eu_vdvm1_det_024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="298" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sXBSB1fAVQM/VcxfTUxEwVI/AAAAAAAAFaU/cshzC-AN_5o/s400/yamaha_337732_2014_yam_mt09_eu_vdvm1_det_024.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">On the contrary, the non-adjustable front end on the Aprilia is pretty damn good for what it is, the rear is planted and when coupled with a longer chassis the Ape is stable when pitched over. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The Ape takes more effort to tip in and change direction due to its higher centre of gravity and footprint; however once pitched over, it is less squirrely and more predictable. She does push wide getting on the throttle when cornering, requiring you to tuck her in with more inner bar pressure. Trusting she'll stay put. She will. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RrdcpMsmM5Q/VcxfStWftSI/AAAAAAAAFaQ/Wqx2tIKq780/s1600/146_1104_09_z%252Baprilia_dorsoduro_1200%252Bmodular_chassis.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RrdcpMsmM5Q/VcxfStWftSI/AAAAAAAAFaQ/Wqx2tIKq780/s400/146_1104_09_z%252Baprilia_dorsoduro_1200%252Bmodular_chassis.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">I feel I am quicker on the MT09 than I was on the Shiver – however the MT requires me to work harder and demands more technique. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Getting the Yam to dance is more difficult than the Ape – not a bike for a Greenie/Squid. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Once I get the suspension sorted – this rating will change (I suspect) dramatically. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><b>Results </b></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: large; line-height: 16px;"><b>Seat/Comfort</b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">I'm not a big guy. </span></div>

<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">I can easily flat foot either bike – more easily the MT09 as the Shiver has a wider saddle. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The MT09 seat is on the firm side, however even after a couple of hours on the bike it does not cause me trouble. The Shiver might be slightly more comfortable, but I'd be splitting hairs to call a clear winner on comfort. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Both bikes have wide bars with a natural reach – no shoulder or wrist pressure. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">All. Very. Comfortable. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Foot position is slightly more rear-set on the Shiver, the MT09 is very Motard in the configuration of its controls. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">No clear stand-out for this component, both bikes offer a great naked-bike experience. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><b>Results</b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Yamaha = Aprilia = 8/10</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: large; line-height: 16px;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-size: large; line-height: 16px;"><b>Dash/Switchgear</b> </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The Yamaha delivers a somewhat Spartan dash and instrument cluster. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">For the most part – it's not bad at all. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">It's a monochrome, black on white affair, with clear indications and read-out. Gear position, speed and RPM are all there and are updated promptly. It's easy to read and doesn't suffer sunlight washout or night dazzle. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">A fuel gauge is included, but you'll need to scroll for temperature – both intake (air) and coolant (engine) which is annoying. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The real prize though is the ability to alter cylinder mixture using the on-board calibration. Yup, you can update the ECU closed loop setting straight off the bike – damn, that's good. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The MT09 switchgear and blocks are clearly budget, albeit functional. They don't give the impression they are not up to the job or that they are about to fail, they're just not “considered.”</span><br />
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-S3FFXyl-G5Q/Uq-GcJIdZ3I/AAAAAAAADiA/FpWy4LGid10/s1600/IMAG0856.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="181" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-S3FFXyl-G5Q/Uq-GcJIdZ3I/AAAAAAAADiA/FpWy4LGid10/s400/IMAG0856.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">On the other hand, the Aprilia has a much more sophisticated dash – which is both good and bad. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The good – constant air and engine temperature readouts, gear position, speed and large analogue Tacho.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The bad – speed and gear position indicators suffer latency between reality and readout. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">The cluster is temperamental, the slightest miss-use in terms of start-up or shut-down sequence will cause it to have conniptions. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">There is no fuel gauge – just a light.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">It can fog.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">In the Aprilia's defence, the switch-gear and blocks are superior and the tactile experience is more welcoming with better feedback. </span><br />

<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">Visually, the MT09 is much more minimal than the Shiver. More Skeletal. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">This bike is almost like an “Urban Scrambler” - lean, taught and ready for it. Get some. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">I'm running an <a href="http://bitsar.blogspot.com.au/2015/08/now-with-added-akrapovic.html" target="_blank">Akrapovic raceline system</a> (not shown in this picture), straight through, no catalyser, no baffle and yet she's more Hornet than Howitzer. </span><br />

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">In contrast, the Shiver is muscular, robust – a real looker. More bark than bite. </span></div>

<span style="line-height: 16px;">I must stress I have remained as objective as possible and am not surprised these bikes came out so closely. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">In many ways they are similar in their approach to being motorcycles; in other ways not so similar.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="line-height: 16px;">It just so happens the constraints where they are dissimilar they are also somewhat polarised. Opposite.</span></div>

<span style="line-height: 16px;"><br /></span></div>

<br />
Akrapovic full system - header pipes straight through, no catalyzer,<br />
Carbon canister. 3 - into - 1. No baffle<br />
<br />
All of the above = braaaaaaaaaaarp.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hi5ZOjWbsuU/VZ4kdpg-f9I/AAAAAAAAFVQ/ItCj5RSrrpU/s1600/20150709_172536.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hi5ZOjWbsuU/VZ4kdpg-f9I/AAAAAAAAFVQ/ItCj5RSrrpU/s400/20150709_172536.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<b>As with all these types of clips</b> - I apply the caveat "doesn't do it justice" - hard surfaces all around, banging compression waves, not a true representation. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
My little buddy Milo was intrigued by all the braaaarping.....Good Dog. :))</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I've had the pipe for a couple of weeks - the bottom end is a more responsive with less hesitation. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
She seems to run cooler and breath better.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Damn - I love this bike.<br />

<br />
I am a proponent of riding in all conditions, to the conditions.<br />
You never know when you'll get caught out in bad weather or when you'll need to change modes and settle in to get the distance covered.<br />
<br />
It's important to learn these skills.<br />
It's better to learn on your own terms.<br />
<br />
I knew the Hills would be cold, foggy and somewhat dodgy this morning - great opportunity to put the MT09 through its paces and see how she dances when things aren't quite right.<br />
<br />
I head in the general direction of Emerald, the fog is hanging in the distance - the dash reads 8 degrees Celsius.<br />
<br />
Heated grips on. 100 percent. Check.<br />
<br />
The temperature continues to drop, eventually bottoming out at 4 degrees as I pass over Mount Burnett in a roundabout way to Gembrook. I'm getting on with the bike - beginning to to understand her a little more.......BANG! The rear lets go instantaneously, the bars dip violently - I've just hit some black-ice.<br />
<br />
Settle down - settle in. All is well - you 'saved' it.<br />
<br />
I continue calmly allowing the adrenaline to subside before pulling over to take a break. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Matte Grey MT on a Matte Grey day<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Time to push on. I take a detour to Nar Nar Goon (north) - some small roads out this way which will allow me to come off pace entirely and enjoy the scenery. The fog is persistent, however there are moments of clarity, both in mind and environment.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Sun desperately peeking through<br />
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Detour over - back on track towards Gembrook. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fog is lifting somewhat and I'm in good spirits. </div>

I am mindful of the kilometres already travelled and the odometer reading. I'm kissing 900kms and my 1,000km service isn't booked for a couple more days.</div>

All in all, an educative ride with the new girl. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The suspension still needs some work, possibly even a rebuild.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But at the heart, the motor is sublime and she has good bones - a light chassis, great ergonomics and a willingness to dance. </div>

<br />
In that time it's seen daily commuting, overnighters, running errands and everything in between.<br />
It's seen torrential rain and extreme heat.<br />
It's 100% waterproof, rugged as hell, and relatively lightweight.<br />
It has never let me down.<br />
<br />
<br />
The US-30 provides enough room for a large laptop to lay flat for commuting to the office.<br />
<br />
I can easily store my wets and basic tools and still fit extra clothes, shoes and whatever else I need for touring.<br />
<br />
Off the bike it has a shoulder strap so you can lug it around easily.<br />
<br />
All. Very. Versatile.<br />
<br />
So - by way of the new MT09, it was time to again setup the Kriega.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<b>Step 1</b><br />
<div>
Remove the seat to access the sub-frame - you'll need to locate some spot to thread the mounting straps. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the rear straps I used the last set of frame tags which hold the rear faring on</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kbKaXAp0m5w/VXonn8b60_I/AAAAAAAAFJA/GVHgFygI8Zo/s1600/20150608_155057.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kbKaXAp0m5w/VXonn8b60_I/AAAAAAAAFJA/GVHgFygI8Zo/s400/20150608_155057.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 2</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Use two of the four straps supplied and thread one through on each side</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4qFeKmMhdJQ/VXonbm2RZ5I/AAAAAAAAFI4/1EuVjVRlGmM/s1600/20150608_155109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4qFeKmMhdJQ/VXonbm2RZ5I/AAAAAAAAFI4/1EuVjVRlGmM/s400/20150608_155109.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J74MjfYrOTI/VXog3tjUEBI/AAAAAAAAFKI/8igFitbgbyY/s1600/20150608_160052.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-J74MjfYrOTI/VXog3tjUEBI/AAAAAAAAFKI/8igFitbgbyY/s400/20150608_160052.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 3</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Repeat Step 2 for the forward mounting straps. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used the gap between the sub-frame and the seat-lock. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UK2v9IEDvrs/VXogkptPpVI/AAAAAAAAFHc/SJ1-0aKXNYM/s1600/20150608_161601.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UK2v9IEDvrs/VXogkptPpVI/AAAAAAAAFHc/SJ1-0aKXNYM/s400/20150608_161601.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 4</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tidy up all the dangling straps and make things neat. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1ax9ZaVyRY8/VXogdzxCY6I/AAAAAAAAFHU/EJs23paSgks/s1600/20150608_161609.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1ax9ZaVyRY8/VXogdzxCY6I/AAAAAAAAFHU/EJs23paSgks/s400/20150608_161609.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9Caj2N4NTes/VXogXJrVKVI/AAAAAAAAFHM/QWT245Qxs74/s1600/20150608_161738.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9Caj2N4NTes/VXogXJrVKVI/AAAAAAAAFHM/QWT245Qxs74/s400/20150608_161738.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step 5</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Attach bag.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Done and done</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FxuX39imlCQ/VXof3J54mtI/AAAAAAAAFGk/W_LEYAHTurc/s1600/20150608_162315.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FxuX39imlCQ/VXof3J54mtI/AAAAAAAAFGk/W_LEYAHTurc/s400/20150608_162315.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dIOIM0HbEu0/VXoffr-dGfI/AAAAAAAAFGM/kCS8VUbhn7A/s1600/20150608_162401.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dIOIM0HbEu0/VXoffr-dGfI/AAAAAAAAFGM/kCS8VUbhn7A/s400/20150608_162401.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the past I've used cumbersome Ventura packs and their associated (and required) frames which attach to the bike - this type of luggage is good, however it is not transferable from bike to bike. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the other hand, the Kriega gear can be used on any bike, it does not detract from the aesthetics, and when removed, leaves all but no trace of ever having been there - no frame, no brackets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just - gone. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
It's no secret the stock suspension on the MT09 leaves most riders wanting, however it is adjustable - both front and back - so before a final assessment can be made, some tweaking is required.<br />
<br />
As always, the first step is to record the default setup.<br />
As per my previous post <a href="http://bitsar.blogspot.com.au/2013/05/setup-solo-suspension.html" target="_blank">Setup: Solo Suspension</a> my shorthand is as such:<br />
<br />
R - Rings visible on suspension crown for preload<br />
C - Clicks closed from fully open on rebound.<br />
<br />
For the uninitiated, here is a very simplistic explanation of preload and rebound:<br />
<br />
<b>Preload</b><br />
The suspension spring is statically compressed to increase preload tension, thereby requiring more force to further dynamically compress the spring. End result - stiffer suspension.<br />
<br />
<b>Rebound</b><br />
Suspension rebound refers to the rate at which the suspension oil returns to 'rest'<br />
The rebound adjustment manipulates a valve aperture which increases or reduces the rate at which the suspension oil can flow.<br />
<br />
Open the aperture and you <b>reduce</b> rebound damping, thereby providing <b>less</b> resistance to oscillation. <br />
Close the aperture and you <b>increase</b> rebound damping, thereby proving <b>more</b> resistance to oscillation.<br />
<br />
The stock MT09 front-end settings were:<br />
R = 6.5<br />
C = 7<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-surMUZgU5vo/VXO3rb77GrI/AAAAAAAAFEQ/e9Eb1GWTuf0/s1600/20150607_094447.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-surMUZgU5vo/VXO3rb77GrI/AAAAAAAAFEQ/e9Eb1GWTuf0/s400/20150607_094447.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
There is no doubt in my mind that I need to add preload and increase rebound damping.<br />
<br />
After some adjusting, measuring and static tests I arrive at the following settings.<br />
R = 4<br />
C = 13<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
14mm Spanner - Preload adjustment (required evenly on both fork legs)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--CNlo69FKek/VXO3g3XIH-I/AAAAAAAAFFM/vLNf_C2CfM4/s1600/20150607_095016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="303" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--CNlo69FKek/VXO3g3XIH-I/AAAAAAAAFFM/vLNf_C2CfM4/s400/20150607_095016.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Flathead screwdriver - Rebound adjustment</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_TOs4uGj3T8/VXO3KS31ZyI/AAAAAAAAFD4/zP2rOcy8uMY/s1600/20150607_100159.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_TOs4uGj3T8/VXO3KS31ZyI/AAAAAAAAFD4/zP2rOcy8uMY/s400/20150607_100159.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Time to dial in the rear. Again first step is to record stock settings:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rear shock has stepped notches ranging from 1 - 7 and a rebound screw without clicked internals. As such, my shorthand is as follows:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
N = Notches from setting 1 preload</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
T = One full revolution of the screw head from fully closed</div>
<br />
The stock MT09 rear-end settings were:<br />
N = 4<br />
T = 4.5<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FBU93Mdr0KM/VXO2_xnWlBI/AAAAAAAAFDw/DSTVmfoqx-s/s1600/20150607_100551.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FBU93Mdr0KM/VXO2_xnWlBI/AAAAAAAAFDw/DSTVmfoqx-s/s400/20150607_100551.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Again, after some fettling I arrived at:<br />
N = 6<br />
T = 1.5<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Using the supplied C-Spanner to add preload</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MdUAKAFidN4/VXO2rRlQ4OI/AAAAAAAAFDg/OzIo0Mhj_iM/s1600/20150607_101443.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MdUAKAFidN4/VXO2rRlQ4OI/AAAAAAAAFDg/OzIo0Mhj_iM/s400/20150607_101443.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The rebound screw can be accessed via the left side of the bike through the frame</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WfcHlZe3Roo/VXO200cfSVI/AAAAAAAAFDo/WOQCShEfbR8/s1600/20150607_100617.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WfcHlZe3Roo/VXO200cfSVI/AAAAAAAAFDo/WOQCShEfbR8/s400/20150607_100617.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally I checked the tyre pressure - oh dear!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(F/R) - (38/40) psi</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That won't do - especially if I'm going to kill these Dunlops. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I reduce the cold pressure to:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
(F/R) - (30/31) psi</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After completing my setup and rechecking my work to ensure everything was cinched down I set off for a shakedown. Let the fun begin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Day 2 - photo roll.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-idsN0XG-MwE/VXO0iKM963I/AAAAAAAAFEg/wdAElct4Efg/s1600/20150607_113609.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-idsN0XG-MwE/VXO0iKM963I/AAAAAAAAFEg/wdAElct4Efg/s400/20150607_113609.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qkdptlnDVDY/VXO14GdscUI/AAAAAAAAFEw/pwiz5Rps3fc/s1600/20150607_110212.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qkdptlnDVDY/VXO14GdscUI/AAAAAAAAFEw/pwiz5Rps3fc/s400/20150607_110212.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I stopped mid way through the ride to readjust the rear-end. She was chattering about.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I reduced preload and rebound to the following:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
N = 5</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
T = 3.5</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think there is still room for improvement. I will let things bed down for a week or so of daily use and adjust as necessary. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That said, the chassis is much more compliant after these changes. She is still a little misbehaved in the Hills, however in the Urban environment the adjustments have improved stability dramatically. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

<b>Preloading</b> the Yam whilst on the <b>Rebound</b> from the Ape......</div>

There are many like it, but this one is mine. Today was both a day of sadness and happiness.<br />
I was simultaneously and preemptively pining for the soon to be gone Ape, whilst excitedly anticipating the arrival of the new Yammy.<br />
<br />
I busied myself in the morning with housework, bike-trade preparation and YouTube.<br />
Trying <b>NOT</b> to play the waiting game......<br />
<br />
Tick-tock.....<br />
<br />
I'd been sitting in my riding gear for well over an hour - when the phone rings.<br />
Yeah.........not toey at all..<br />
The MT-09 is ready for pick up. Game on.<br />
<br />
I make it to the dealer in record time to take delivery of the new girl and trade the old girl.<br />
"Cheers fellas - see 'ya later."<br />
Onto some black stuff.<br />
<br />
First impressions of the MT-09A<br />
<br />
The good:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>The throttle mapping and ECU tune are greatly improved - dramatically so. Both A and STD modes are eager and satisfying whilst remaining usable. B-mode is not required. </li>
<li>The mirrors are brilliant - excellent vision</li>
<li>The chassis is taught, tight and nimble with a small, flick-able footprint. </li>
<li>That engine - sublime, tractable. Instant torque, instant response. A masterpiece.</li>
<li>The brakes have great feel and power, the ABS module has not diluted this. </li>
<li>The gearbox is tight as a drum. I'm still breaking her in and clutchless shifts are laser precise. </li>
<li>I LOVE THE ERGOS! Damn - nothing like a sit in bike steered by telepathy!</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The not so good:</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>The OEM Dunlops are terrible - I'm going to reduce tyre pressure to shred them ASAP. Yuk!</li>
<li>The suspension is very soft. I have not yet adjusted from factory settings (plush), once I have dialled this in as much as possible I will reassess.</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br />
So. The time has come for this Blog to turn a corner.</div>
<div>
Stay tuned for some Yammy antics.</div>
<div>
Thanks Ape, you were a good girl. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Day 1 - photo-roll.<br />
